Halloween Pet Safety

Make Halloween a treat, not a trap, for your pets

Halloween brings out all the frights: creepy goblins, looming skeletons, cackling witches. And for your pets, it can bring out even more scares.

“Keep the chocolate away from your four-legged friends” is common knowledge, but there are more potential problems lurking beyond the candy bowl. Between loud noises, new smells and attractive decorations, there’s a lot to be on the lookout for when it comes to keeping your pets safe.

Consider your pet’s perspective when you’re embarking on your holiday adventure and keep these tips from the ASPCA in mind:

  • Costumes: Watch out for small pieces that your pet can choke on, and make sure the outfit doesn’t limit their ability to move or breathe.
  • Crowds: Offer your friend an attractive distraction from the trick-or-treaters or your party guests. This can be a soothing focal point or ease anxiety.
  • Decorations: When it comes to party decor, keep fire hazards in mind. Candles are beautiful but can be knocked over, or a curious kitty could get burned. Try LEDs; they’re energy efficient, too!
  • Candy: In addition to chocolate, watch out for xylitol, a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free candies. Keep the 24-hour ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline handy (888-426-4435), or call your veterinarian or the Poison Control Center immediately if you suspect your friend has ingested something dangerous.
  • Bring them indoors: Pets can be easily startled with all the noises and new faces out on the streets. Make sure your pet is microchipped, and bring them inside if possible. If you take your pet out after dark, make sure he or she wears a reflective collar, is securely leashed and has proper identification attached.

By taking a few precautions, you and your pets can have a very happy—and healthy—Halloween!
